How to choose the right aluminum grade for your project?

What is Aluminum Grade?

Aluminum is one of the most common elements on earth and one of the most popular metals for metalwork. Sometimes 100% pure aluminum is supplied as a finished product, but often aluminum is alloyed with another element to enhance its properties. Aluminum is available in different grades depending on the alloying elements. Each grade exhibits specific properties - which is why aluminum is considered an incredibly versatile metal.

See below for the properties and characteristics of the aluminium grades to help you choose the right aluminium grade for your project.

1050H14

The purest and most popular form of aluminum, comprising at least 99% aluminum content. It is a light and ductile grade of aluminum that is a specialized sheet specification. It is most commonly used by workers who will bend sheets into many shapes such as food containers, light reflectors and cable sheathing.

The sheet also comes with a PVC coating on one side to prevent any surface scratches that may occur during cutting or delivery.

2A12t6

2A12 aerospace grade aluminum is a kind of high-strength hard aluminum, which can be strengthened by heat treatment. Aluminium alloy plates 2A12 usually is used in aircraft and other industries.such as spare parts and components with heavy load, skeleton parts, skin, bulkhead, wing rib, wing spars etc.

2017

The aluminium 2017 plates have low density and appropriate melting point both in metric as well as in imperial. What makes it so essential in industries? It is yielding strength, shear strength, elongation (annealed), tensile strength (annealed), and elastic modulus. Similar to density and melting point, you can get in metric and imperial units too. Other property that makes it an ideal product is thermal expansion and thermal conductivity. The aluminium alloys exhibit other designated forms also. Know how machinability formability and welding have an impact on it.

5083'O'

Formed from magnesium and available in plate or flake form, the 5083 aluminum alloy is the strongest non-heat treatable alloy (though not as strong or hard as the 6082 grade). It is highly resistant to both seawater and chemical environments, and maintains its strength after welding. This material is mainly used for vehicle manufacturing purposes such as rail vehicles and vehicle chassis. The "O" indicates its mild temper.

5754

5754 is a European born alloy that is very similar to 5052. As a wrought alloy, it can be formed by rolling, extrusion, and forging, but not casting. It can be worked to produce tempers with a higher strength but lower ductility.

The characteristics of 5754 aluminum are: good machinability, great corrosion resistance, and weldability. 5754 aluminum is also stronger than 5251 and is better suited for flooring applications. On the downside, it cannot be utilized for casting and cannot be heat treated. 5754 aluminum is under the category of wrought alloys and can be produced through rolling, extrusion, and forging. 5754 aluminum can also be cold-treated to produce tempers that are substantially stronger but less ductile. Usually, some form of heating method is used to forge metals into the desired shape. With 5754 aluminum, which is reformed via a procedure called cold working, this is not the case. Mechanical stress placed on the metal changes its crystalline structure, increasing its strength.

6061T6

This alloy features medium to high strength. It also has good corrosion resistance, weldability, workability, and machinability. Its strength and resistance to corrosion are improved through tempering.

6063T6

Available in box form, this magnesium and silicon alloy can be bent and manipulated readily and is suitable for retail shop fittings.

6082T6

This magnesium and silicon alloy is the strongest of the 6000 class alloys and is the most popular on the market, available in sheet metal, plate, rod or box. It is suitable for structural applications such as door frames and handrails, as well as welding and machining.
